French President Emmanuel Macron, center, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, right, and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi travel on board a train bound to Kyiv after departing from Poland Thursday, June 16, 2022.

(CNN) The Ukrainian military's defense in the eastern region of Luhansk is growing more difficult, according to Serhiy Hayday, the head of Luhansk's military administration. Hayday said Russia was once again targeting the Azot chemical plant, where just over 500 civilians are said to be sheltering.
Western intelligence and military officials believe Russia's war in Ukraine is in a critical stage that could determine the long-term outcome of the conflict, according to multiple sources familiar with US and other Western intelligence.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is poised to lead a working group of nearly 50 countries to discuss the crisis on Wednesday, when the US expects more announcements of weapons and equipment packages for Ukraine, according to a senior US defense official.
Ukrainian officials have warned that Russia is gaining ground in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, specifically in the city of Severodonetsk, which has seen some of the heaviest fighting recently.
Without an influx of more weapons, some Ukrainian officials have said it will be increasingly difficult to halt Russia's incremental progress or reclaim occupied ground in the region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said during a video address on Tuesday that fierce fighting continues in Severodonetsk and the Kharkiv region. In Severodonetsk "the losses, unfortunately, are painful," Zelensky said. "But we have to hold on." He went on to say how it is vital for the Ukrainian military to stay in Donbas.
(AP) As the war rages on, Ukraine is increasingly contaminated by mines. Ukraine's State Emergency Service said last week that 300,000 square kilometers need to be cleared and the ongoing fighting will only expand the area.
UKRAINE / SIEVIERODONETSK
(AP, CNN, Reuters) Ukraine showed no signs of obeying a Russian ultimatum to surrender Severodonetsk early on Wednesday. The Ukrainian general staff said in the early hours that its soldiers were still repelling Russian assaults on the city.
But, Serhiy Haidai, governor of the eastern Luhansk region, acknowledged that a mass evacuation of civilians from Sievierodonetsk now is "simply not possible" due to the relentless shelling and fighting. In all, 70 civilians were evacuated from the Luhansk region in the last day, the governor said.
Ukrainian forces have been pushed to the industrial outskirts of the city because of "the scorched earth method and heavy artillery the Russians are using," he said.
Haidai also reports Russian troops control about 80% of Sievierodonetsk and have destroyed all three bridges leading out of the city.
About 12,000 people remain in Sievierodonetsk and than 500 civilians are sheltering in the city's Azot chemical plant, which is being relentlessly pounded by the Russians, said to Haidai.
Roman Vlasenko, head of the Severodonetsk district military administration, raised concerns for those sheltering at the chemical plant, saying they have not been supplied in two weeks.
British intelligence said the fighters in the chemical plant could survive underground, and that Russian forces would likely remain focused on the plant, preventing them turning their firepower elsewhere. Meanwhile, Russian general Col-Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev said a humanitarian corridor will be opened today to evacuate civilians from the Azot plant., noting that evacuees would be taken to the town of Svatovo, 35 miles to the north in territory under the control of Russian and separatist forces.
However, Russian-backed separatists from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said Ukraine has disrupted a humanitarian corridor from the Azot chemical plan, RIA news agency reported on Wednesday.
UKRAINE / IZIUM
(CNN) Ukrainian Armed Forces have been able to liberate some settlements on the outskirts of Izium with counterattacks.
Maksym Strelnyk, the deputy of Izium's city council, says estimates 15,000 civilians remain in the city which lacks electricity, water, gas, mobile communications and internet. He adds about 80% of the infrastructure has been destroyed in Izium.
UKRAINE / AGRICULTURE
