ADM-160C MALD-J
Miniature Air Launched Decoy-Jammer
The ADM-160 MALD, formerly known as the Miniature Decoy, is a family of Miniature Air-Launched Decoy (MALD) designed to protect US fighters and bombers from sophisticated netted air defenses. These decoys are released from both aircraft types and will feature the same Radar Cross Section (RCS) related to fighter- and bomber-sized aircraft. The scope of the MALD program is to deliver decoys that will confuse the enemy by posing as friendly aircraft. The first version developed by Raytheon entered service with the US Air Force in 2008. The Raytheon ADM-160C Miniature Air Launched Decoy-Jammer (MALD-J) is a radar jamming variant of the Miniature Air Launched Decoy (MALD) developed by Raytheon for the United States Department of Defense (DoD). The United States Air Force (USAF) awarded Raytheon a two-year MALD-J $80 million development, testing and integration contract on March 31, 2008. The new advanced modular decoy system had already completed developmental flight testing before the contract award and is expected to provide new airborne electronic attack capability. The USAF is expected to take the production decision, also known as Milestone C, in early 2011.
Ну а новый MALD-J
The Miniature Air Launched Decoy (MALD) and Jammer (MALD-J) configurations are key enablers supporting Air Force Global Strike, Global Response, Space and C4ISR, and Air and Space Expeditionary Force Concepts of Operation. MALD is a low cost, powered, expendable decoy designed to represent the kinematics and radar signature characteristics of various combat aircraft. The MALD will be employed from various aircraft platforms to stimulate, saturate, and deceive integrated air defense systems (IADS) thus increasing the survivability of strike aircraft. MALD production is complete and transitioned to sustainment. MALD-J is currently in production and is the DODs only stand-in jamming capability for Airborne Electronic Attack Systems. MALD-J is designed to degrade or deny the IADS detection of friendly aircraft or munitions, and is able to operate in both decoy and jammer modes.
Red Flag 16-3 lasted from July 11-29 and Marines were present to support the exercise from June 28 through July 31. VMFA-121 brought the main Autonomic Logistics Information System server to Red Flag. The deployable version stayed at Marine Air Station Yuma, AZ and was used for the aircraft there, Marine Corps spokeswoman 2nd Lt. Casey Littesy wrote in an Aug. 9 email to ITN.
The events during Red Flag were focused on defensive and offensive counter air exercises, strategic attacks, targeting and combat search and rescue training.
O'Brien said none of the events focused on close air support but instead were air-to-air focused, according to O'Brien.
This was the first time the F-35 had worked with the F-22 Raptor. The fifth generation fighter was able to take pressure off of the F-22s because it could identify threats sooner and strike faster than the fourth generation aircraft, O'Brien said.
Other aircraft that participated in the exercise include EA-18G Growlers and F-16 Fighting Falcons. O'Brien said F-35Bs have worked with those aircraft in previous exercises but not on the same scale as at Red Flag.
VMFA-121 is drafting an after action report about its finding at Red Flag and the squadron plans to participate in future iterations of the exercise, O'Brien said.
